ALPHABET-OGRAPHY

From the great documentary photographer and mentor, Susan Meiselas comes an assignment that I usually begin my Photo 1/Intro class with. ASSIGNMENT: ALPHABETOGRAPHY The student locates objects, lines, and forms that most resemble each letter of the alphabet, from A to Z. Letters can be discovered in natural and man-made forms, found in shadows, or made by cropping with the frame of the camera. COMP TOOLS #1: Leading Lines and Symmetry

Assignment: Leading lines are lines within an image that lead the eye to another point in the image, or occasionally, out of the image. Anything with a definite line can be a leading line. Fences, bridges, even a shoreline can lead the eye. If you can pair leading lines with a subject that is placed further along the line,deeper into your image, you will more than likely have a very solid image. Symmetry (or Balance) - While not all balanced photographs are symmetrical, all symmetrical photographs are balanced. Symmetry (also known as formal balance) is achieved when both sides of the image hold equal weight. Photographers have creative license to take this ‘symmetry’ as literally or as figuratively as they please, as you can see by the two examples below. Each photograph is equally balanced if split down the middle, yet one is literally symmetrical and the other uses different elements of the composition to appear symmetrical. In a sense, we are curators of visual information - meaning that we decide what to include and what NOT to include in the frame. Simply by making a photograph of a subject, we are drawing our audience's attention to that subject.
